Lessons of Life: The lesson of the old man

By Eddy Montilla.

Old Man

Yesterday, I took some minutes during lunchtime to write some topics for my blog. I had a sandwich in my right hand and I was typing something in the computer with my left hand. An old man was sitting near me, and at his side, there was an empty table for two. At that time, my attention was suddenly distracted by two girls who were walking at a brisk pace to try to get those available seats. Their eyes were on the seats and they did not realize who their neighbour would be. When the girls got there and saw him, they looked at each other and one of them said: “Let’s try to find other seats.”

You can interpret this story in many different ways…You can think that they just did not want to bother that old man or they just changed their mind and wanted to go to another place. You can say that this story is just a figment of my imagination, but after so many years observing and studying the way people think, feel and behave, I can assure you that they did not sit there for only one reason: They did not want to sit near an old man.

This modern society makes progress day by day in technology, but moves backward in terms of common sense. If you give the elderly a scornful look, what do you think you will get in 30 or 40 years when you become an old person? When you are 20 years old, you see life as if it were eternal. However, you only have to reach the age of 40 to understand how ephemeral youth can be. Show respect, care and love for the elderly, so that when you become an old man/woman, you can at least show respect, care and love for yourself. Remember that to reach that period of life is only a matter of time.
