The way I see sex abuse scandals in Catholic Church

By Eddy Montilla

Without being scandalized.

Sex abuse cases committed by Catholic priests in many countries made many people open their eyes and mouth as if these problems were the prelude to the end of the world. By reading either the Bible or a history book, you will see that there is no reason to be surprised. The death of Jesus was at the hands of Roman soldiers, but the religious groups, in particular, religious leaders who wanted to retain their positions at any cost, played a decisive role in his death. It was Jesus himself who, referring to them, said that you must take care to do everything they say. But don’t do what they do. Then, should we be scandalized for problems that come from almost two thousand years ago?

However, I want to make that abundantly clear: A soutane should not grant immunity from prosecutions, so all these priests who committed sexual abuse against children should know how small, cold and sunless a cell is. The parishioners’ mistake who today feel disappointed because of Catholic Church sexual abuse cases was to magnify the image of their priests as if they were immaculate when in fact they laugh, cry and make mistakes like anyone else.

You cannot blame the Catholic Church for these sexual abuse cases, but the priests who were involved in them. Those who today point their accusing finger at the Catholic Church should also ask themselves how clean, perfect and immaculate they are. Their attitude could easily make them another modern group of Pharisees.

Do you change your team just for a lost game? No. Do you break up with your girlfriend (boyfriend) or wife (husband) for a simple quarrel? No. There is no saint without a past, no sinner without a future. Then, my recommendation for parishioners is to keep praying and going to their church as usual because the bad behavior of some priests does not invalidate the Bible or good things they preach.
