Curiosities: Since when do people sing the song “Happy Birthday to You”?

By Eddy Montilla

Do you remember when we were children and we had a birthday party? One of the biggest moments was when all our friends gathered round us and sang “Happy Birthday to you”. Sometimes we felt shy in front of all of them, sometimes we felt very important. And now, let’s answer the question: Since when do people sing the song “Happy Birthday to You”?

The origin of “Happy Birthday to You” is not very clear, but the song was first published in 1924. The American siblings Patty and Mildred J. Hill wrote and composed a song called “Good Morning to All” in 1893. The melody of “Happy Birthday to you” clearly resembles to the Hills’ song, but it is uncertain who changed the lyrics or how it turned into a birthday song. The song “Happy Birthday to You has been translated into more than a dozen of languages and many people consider it the most recognized song in the English language.
